Citations and NAP consistency, without the folklore.

This is the corner of local SEO with the widest gap between what is sold and what is true. Consistency matters operationally and it matters for identity. It is not a ranking dial you turn by fixing a comma.

What is a citation?

Any place online that lists your business name, address and phone number — a directory, a chamber of commerce, an industry association, a social profile.

It does not have to link to you. The mention itself is the citation, and that is why they are talked about separately from backlinks: a link is about authority, a citation is about identity. It is one more independent source saying that this business, with this name, exists at this number in this city.

That distinction is the whole reason to bother. Search engines and AI assistants are trying to resolve you to a single real entity. Every consistent, independent record makes that resolution more confident.

How much does exact consistency really matter?

Keep name, address and phone materially accurate everywhere. Do not believe that one formatting variation costs you rankings — nobody has shown that, and the claim is usually attached to something being sold.

This is where we differ from most of what you will read. Materially wrong information is a genuine problem: an old phone number, a previous address, a business name nobody uses. Those confuse customers before they confuse anything else, and fixing them is straightforward and worth doing.

"Suite 6" versus "#6", or "Street" versus "St", is a different category of thing. It is presented as urgent because tidying it can be sold as a monthly service, and there is no good public evidence that it moves rankings on its own. Our own workflow tells us not to claim it does, so this guide does not.

There is a concrete cost to over-tidying, too. Editing core fields on a verified Google listing can trigger re-verification and pull it while pending — see what causes a suspension. Trading a live listing for a formatting change is a bad trade.

Which citations are worth having in Calgary?

The Google Business Profile first, then the handful of places customers actually check, then your industry's real association or regulator. Not a bulk submission service.

The order below is by usefulness rather than by how many a service can create for you. Most local businesses need a short list and then nothing more for a year.

Google Business Profile
Not a citation exactly, but the record everything else is checked against. Get this exactly right before touching any other listing.
Apple Maps and Bing Places
Both free, both quick, and both feed assistants and in-car navigation that Google does not. Genuinely worth the twenty minutes.
Your industry body or regulator
A college, an association, a licensing register. High trust, specific to what you do, and often the strongest signal of the lot for a regulated trade.
The Calgary Chamber and local business groups
Real organisations with real membership, which is what separates them from a directory that exists only to sell listings.
Yelp and Yellow Pages
Worth claiming and keeping accurate. Worth very little effort beyond that for most Calgary businesses.

What about bulk citation services?

They produce hundreds of listings on sites nobody visits, and they are the most common way a business ends up with inconsistent records it cannot edit.

The pitch is appealing — one payment, three hundred citations — and the outcome is usually the opposite of the goal. Listings get created from whatever data was in the form, on platforms with no editing access, and when a detail changes you cannot correct them. That is how a business ends up with an old phone number scattered across the web permanently.

If you have already used one, do not try to unwind it wholesale. Correct the handful that customers actually see and leave the rest alone.

How do you audit what is out there?

Search your business name in quotes, plus your phone number as its own search. The phone number search is the one that finds records you had forgotten.

Put your exact business name in quotation marks and read the first three pages. Then search your phone number by itself — that surfaces listings created under a former name, a previous owner, or a franchise system, which is exactly the category of record you cannot find by searching your current name.

Write down what you find and what is wrong with each. Fix the ones with materially wrong details first, and be honest about which of the rest are worth an afternoon.

This is also worth doing before a rebrand rather than after, because the old records are what a rebrand has to chase.

Do citations help you get named by AI assistants?

Indirectly, yes. Corroboration across independent sources is exactly what a model needs to be confident enough to name a specific business.

An assistant recommending a local business is making a claim it has to stand behind, and the mechanism that makes that safe is agreement between sources. A business whose name, service and city are stated the same way in several independent places is easier to name than one that appears once.

That is a reason to get the important handful right rather than to chase volume — and it is the same reason your own site's structured data should agree with your listing. If you want the mechanism, how AI assistants decide who to name covers it properly.

Common questions

Will fixing my citations improve my rankings?
Correcting materially wrong details — an old phone number, a previous address — removes a real problem and is worth doing. Standardising formatting that is already accurate is not something we would predict a ranking change from, and we would not sell it as one.
How many citations do I need?
There is no number. A correct Google profile, Apple and Bing, your industry body, and one or two local organisations covers most Calgary businesses. Beyond that you are into diminishing returns quickly.
What if I moved and old addresses are everywhere?
Fix the Google profile first, then the handful of places a customer would actually check. Old records on directories nobody visits are not worth the hours. Search your phone number to find the ones you have forgotten about.
Should the address on my website match my Google listing exactly?
Where both are shown, yes, and the site is the safe side to change — editing a verified Google listing carries re-verification risk that editing your own footer does not. If you are a service-area business that hides its address, do not publish one on the site either.
