Your Google Business Profile is suspended. Here's the order to work through.

A suspension removes you from Maps and from the map pack immediately, usually with no explanation beyond an email. The causes are a short list, and most of them are fixable without arguing with anyone.

What does suspended actually mean?

Either your listing is hidden from Maps and search entirely, or it is still visible but you have lost the ability to manage it. The second is the softer case and is often resolved by verifying again.

Google does not usually say which of the two you are in, so check from outside: search the business name in a private window and look at Maps. If the listing is still there, you have a management-access problem. If it has gone, you are out of local results until it is reinstated, and that is the urgent version.

Either way, do not create a second listing. A duplicate is the most common panic reaction and it makes reinstatement materially harder, because you then have two records competing and Google's own guidance treats duplicates as a violation in their own right.

What usually causes it?

Editing a verified listing's core details, a business model Google's guidelines do not allow at that address, keywords in the business name, or a change that looks like an ownership takeover.

The most frequent trigger among small businesses is an edit rather than an offence — changing the business name, address, or category on a verified listing, especially several at once, especially soon after verification. Google re-checks, and while it re-checks the listing can go.

The name field is the second. Adding a service or a city to your business name — the sign outside says one thing and the listing says another — breaks the representation rule, and it is widely done because it appears to work right up until it does not.

Keyword-stuffed name
The listing name must be the real-world business name. "Smith Plumbing" is fine; "Smith Plumbing Calgary Emergency 24/7" is the single most common cause of a name-related suspension.
Address problems
A virtual office, a coworking desk, or a residential address shown publicly for a business that does not serve customers there. Service-area businesses are supposed to hide the address, not invent one.
Too many edits at once
Name, address, category and hours changed in one sitting on a verified listing looks like a takeover. Batch changes with a real move, and make one at a time otherwise.
A duplicate listing
Often created years earlier by a franchise, a directory, or a previous owner, and only noticed when it collides with yours.

What is the reinstatement process?

Fix the underlying violation first, then submit the reinstatement request. Submitting while the problem is still on the listing is how people end up in a loop.

The order matters and most of the frustration comes from getting it backwards. If the name has keywords in it, change it back to the real name before requesting anything. If the address is a virtual office, correct it. If there is a duplicate, deal with the duplicate. Only then submit.

Have evidence ready that ties the business to the location and to you: a business licence, a utility bill, signage photographs, vehicle branding, an insurance certificate. For a home-based service-area business this is the hard part, and it is worth assembling before you start rather than during.

Expect it to be slow and expect the first reply to be a template. Persistence through the documented channel works far more often than escalation attempts do.

What does video verification ask for?

An unbroken recording that connects your location, your equipment or stock, and your management access to the profile — filmed in one take, without cuts.

Google has increasingly moved to video for verification and reinstatement, and it catches people out because it is not a photo montage. It is a single continuous recording, and the usual sequence is: exterior with street context and signage, the entrance, then inside to the working area and equipment, then finishing on a device signed into the Business Profile account.

For a service-area business with no storefront, the equivalent is branded vehicle with plate visible, tools and stock, business licence and paperwork, and the signed-in account at the end. Film it once, all the way through, and do not edit it — a cut is what invalidates most attempts.

Have the licence and any regulatory registration to hand before you start recording. Stopping to find a document means starting again.

How do you avoid it happening again?

Keep the listing describing the real business exactly, change one thing at a time, and leave harmless formatting differences alone.

After reinstatement the listing is watched more closely, so the safest period is also the one where people are most tempted to start optimising again. Make one change, wait for it to settle, then make the next.

This is also the reason we do not tidy cosmetic address formatting on a verified listing for clients. An edit to a core field can trigger re-verification and pull the listing while it is pending, and a mismatched suite-number format is not worth that risk. Batch that kind of change with a genuine move.

Common questions

How long does reinstatement take?
There is no published timeline and the honest answer is that it varies from days to several weeks. Anyone quoting you a fixed number is guessing. What reliably shortens it is fixing the violation before submitting rather than after being told twice.
Can I make a new listing while I wait?
No. A duplicate makes the case harder and is a violation in itself. If a duplicate already exists from years ago, deal with it as part of the same request rather than leaving both live.
Will I lose my reviews?
Reviews are attached to the listing, so a reinstated listing normally comes back with them. A listing that is deleted and recreated does not — which is the other reason not to start a new one.
Does a suspension affect my website's rankings?
Not directly. Your website's organic results are a separate system from the Business Profile, so a site can hold its ordinary blue-link positions while the map listing is gone. For a business that gets most of its calls from the map pack, that is cold comfort — but it does mean the site keeps working while you sort the listing out.
