What an SEO expert actually does all month.

The job is less mysterious than the industry makes it sound, and the parts that matter are all things you can ask to see.

What does an SEO expert actually do all month?

The work splits into repair and accumulation. Repair is finite and mostly finished inside the first month. Accumulation is the pages you do not have yet, and it never finishes.

If you want the work applied to your site, our Calgary SEO company page explains who handles it and what we report.

Month one is unglamorous. Titles that say nothing about what the page sells, four pages quietly competing to answer the same search, a redirect chain left behind by a redesign, a Google Business Profile filed under a category nobody types. None of it is visible when you look at your own site, which is exactly why it survives for years.

After that the work changes shape. Every month adds a page or two aimed at searches the site has nothing for, and the terms agreed at the start get checked and written down. An expert who has finished the repairs and has not started writing has run out of work, and the invoice usually keeps arriving anyway.

How do you tell an SEO expert from a monthly report?

Ask what changed on the site last month. An expert names pages and dates. A report names impressions.

Reporting exists in this industry because reporting is cheap and fixing is not. A dashboard generates in seconds and looks like a month of work. One question at the end of a call separates them: what did you change on my website in August, and where can I see it?

A real answer sounds like a list of pages with dates against them. An evasive answer moves to traffic, impressions and building authority. Those are real things. None of them answers the question that was asked.

Does an SEO expert need to be in Calgary?

Not for the technical work. For local search, local knowledge is the difference between a category that sounds right and the one Calgary customers actually type.

Nothing about a title tag is regional. What is regional is knowing that a pharmacy with a strong travel practice is still searched for as a pharmacy, that Alberta regulators expect particular wording on health pages, and which neighbourhood names people attach to a search when they mean nearby.

The stronger argument for hiring locally is accountability. Someone in the same city can be met in person, and a business that can be visited tends to behave like one.

What should you ask before hiring an SEO expert?

Four questions, all answerable before any money moves. Vagueness on any of them is the answer.

None of these require you to understand search engines. They require the other person to have looked at your site, which is the only thing being tested.

What will you change in the first month?
A specific list, not a phase name. Anyone who cannot answer this before being paid has not opened your site.
Who writes the content?
A vague answer means it is outsourced. That is not disqualifying, but you should know, and you should read a draft before anything publishes under your name.
What happens to the work if I leave?
It should stay. Work done on your site, in your accounts, under your ownership, is yours. Anything hosted on the agency's own platform walks out with them.
Show me a report you sent a client last month.
Redacted is fine. You are checking whether it explains anything or simply draws a line going up.

How long before an SEO expert produces anything?

Fixes go live within 1 week. Google re-reads the site over 4–6 weeks. Pages written in month one start ranking around month 2–4.

The flat month straight after a batch of fixes is normal, and it is where most of the disappointment in this industry comes from. The changes are in. Google has not re-evaluated them yet. The graph has not moved.

Anyone promising movement in two weeks is either describing something that was going to happen anyway or about to do something that gets the site penalised.

What does an SEO expert cost in Calgary?

$499 a month here, with no setup fee, no contract, and cancellation any month.

The number worth working out first is what one new customer is worth to you across the time they stay. For most local businesses a single one covers the month, and that arithmetic is the entire argument for doing this at all.

If it does not work for your business, it does not work, and a free call establishes that faster than three months of invoices. Every price is on one page.

Common questions

Is an SEO expert the same as an SEO consultant?
In Calgary the words get used interchangeably. Consultant sometimes means advice without implementation, so ask which one you are buying. Advice you then have to hand to a developer costs more than it first appears.
Can I do this myself?
The first month, largely yes, and the local SEO checklist on this site is the order to do it in. The hard part to sustain alone is the part that never ends: a page a month for searches you currently have nothing for.
Do I have to hand over control of my website?
No. You add an account with the access the work needs and you remove it whenever you like. Anyone requiring ownership transfer is protecting themselves, not you.
How will I know whether it worked?
Clicks and impressions in Google Search Console, compared against the same length of time before the work started. Not against a rolling window, and never against a number from a different tool measuring something else.

Find out if something's broken before you spend anything.

The free check takes about 30 seconds and asks for nothing — not even your email. From $499 a month if you want it fixed.
