Calgary, AB

How the Calgary map pack is actually decided.

Three businesses appear above everything else, and the reason it's usually not you comes down to three factors, one of which you can't change at all.

What is the map pack and why does it matter?

It's the block of three business listings with a map that appears above the ordinary results for local searches. For most 'near me' searches it takes the majority of the attention.

It's drawn from Google Business Profiles rather than from websites, which is why a business with a strong site can be absent from it and a business with almost no website can dominate it.

For service businesses in Calgary it's frequently the difference between a phone ringing and not. The results below it matter more for research searches and for higher-value work, which is why both need attention.

What actually decides the ranking?

Proximity, relevance and prominence. Proximity you can't change, relevance you control directly, prominence you build over time.

Google states these three itself, and understanding which is which stops a lot of wasted effort.

Proximity
How close the business is to the person searching. Not changeable, and it's why your ranking differs across the city.
Relevance
How well your categories, services and site match the search. The fastest thing to fix and the most often wrong.
Prominence
Reviews, citations, links and how well known the business is. Slow, cumulative, and the reason established businesses hold position.

Why does your ranking change depending on where you check from?

Because proximity is calculated from the searcher, not from you. Checking from your own shop shows you a ranking almost nobody else sees.

This is the single most misleading thing about local search, and it produces a lot of false confidence. An owner searches from behind the counter, sees themselves at number one, and concludes the marketing is working.

Check from a few kilometres away, in a private window, and you'll see the real picture. What you're trying to extend is the radius over which you still appear, not a single position.

What's the fastest way to improve map ranking?

Fix the primary category. It's a dropdown, Google weights it heavily, and it's wrong on a large share of Calgary listings.

The category should match the words customers type rather than your professional self-description. A pharmacy filed as a travel clinic, a clinic filed as 'doctor' when patients type 'walk-in', a mechanic filed only as a tire shop — each one removes the business from its highest-volume search.

After that: fill in the services list with plain-text descriptions, add photos from this year, confirm holiday hours, and reply to every review.

How many reviews do you need?

Enough to be credible in your category, and recent. Recency and reply rate matter more than the total, and there's no threshold that unlocks anything.

A business with forty reviews from the last year outperforms one with three hundred that stopped in 2022. Google reads an active review flow as a sign the business is operating; so does a person scrolling.

The reliable method is unglamorous: ask every satisfied customer at the moment the work finishes, with a direct link, by text. Don't gate, don't incentivise, don't buy — bought reviews are detected reliably now and the penalty lands on the profile that benefited.

Does the website affect map ranking at all?

Yes, through relevance. Google reads the site linked from the profile to understand what the business does, so a vague site weakens a good profile.

The profile and the site aren't independent systems. A profile for a plumber linked to a site with one page saying 'quality service since 1998' gives Google very little to confirm relevance against.

Linking the profile to the specific relevant page rather than always the homepage is a small, underused improvement — a service-specific listing pointing at the service page reinforces exactly the relevance you want.

What gets a listing suspended?

A keyword-stuffed business name, an address you don't operate from, virtual offices, and creating duplicate listings. Reinstatement takes weeks.

The business name field is the most common violation. Adding 'Calgary Emergency 24/7' to a name that isn't that on the signage is against the guidelines, it's reported by competitors constantly, and it's an easy suspension.

The address one matters most for service-area businesses. Trades, cleaners and mobile groomers should hide the address and declare service areas — renting a mailbox to create a second location is a pattern Google actively looks for.

Common questions

Why am I number one at my shop but nowhere at home?

Proximity. The map pack is calculated from where the searcher is standing, so your own location shows you a result almost nobody else gets.

Can I rank in a quadrant I'm not located in?

Partly. Relevance and prominence extend how far out you stay competitive, but they don't overrule someone being closer. A second real location is the only reliable way to own a distant area.

Do Google Posts help map ranking?

Marginally, as a freshness signal. They're worth a few minutes a month and they won't rescue a badly configured profile.

Should I put keywords in my business name?

No. It's against the guidelines, it's the most-reported violation, and it risks a suspension that takes weeks to undo.
